A 65-year old general manager of a multi-national corporation, Michael Teo Wee Hian, was sentenced to the maximum fine of $1,000 and disqualified from holding a driving licence for 6 months after pleading guilty to a charge for an offence of driving without due care and attention which had resulted in the death a 78-year old man.
On 11 November 2013, Teo had been driving on the rightmost lane along Ulu Pandan Road when he failed to keep a proper lookout and subsequently hit the victim who was crossing the road.
Although Teo had seen the victim standing near the leftmost kerb looking like he was about to cross the road, he looked away from the victim and continued on his path as he did not think that the victim would cross the road.
Teo did not see that the victim had started to cross the road until it was too late and his car hit the victim as it was unable to stop in time.
The victim suffered multiple injuries as a result of the accident and he died a few hours later.
Teo’s criminal defence lawyer emphasised in mitigation that Teo had a clean driving record for the past 30 years and was driving within speed limit at the time of the offence.
