3 Weeks’ Imprisonment for Indian National Who Molested 64-year old Woman

A 45-year old supervisor from India, Jagudam Rameshwar, was sentenced to three weeks’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge for an offence of outraging the modesty of the 64-year-old woman in a shop in Bugis by rubbing his groin area on a her buttocks.

A second charge for an offence involving him having exposed himself at City Hall MRT station was taken into consideration for the purpose of sentencing.

On 8 June 2014, Jagudam approached the victim from behind and molested her in the shop where she was working.

According to investigations, Jagudam had consumed beer and subsequently felt the sudden urge to touch the victim.

Although Jagudam’s criminal defence lawyer argued for a high fine would be sufficient punishment, the Court disagreed and took the view that Jagudam’s use of his groin in the offence was an aggravating factor which warranted imprisonment being imposed.
