2 Years’ Imprisonment and 12 Strokes of Cane or Gang-related Stabbing

A 21-year old secret society member, Sivakandesh, pleaded guilty to causing hurt with a dangerous weapon by stabbing a 17-year old boy in the left thigh and cutting his face.

Sivakandesh also pleaded guilty to another charge for the unlawful possession of an offensive weapon relating to a 21-cm long chopper he was holding while walking towards Clarke quay on a separate occasion in November 2014.

He was sentenced in total to 2 years’ imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane on 18 March 2015 for the two charges.

Together with two other secret society members, 24-year old Jai Ganesh Tanapolan and 20-year old Guru Aravind, Sivakandesh had gone to the victim’s house after a dispute with him.

The group found the victim sleeping and woke him up by punching his face before proceeding to punch and kick him as well as cut him with a knife.

The Prosecution argued that Sivakandesh had not learnt his lesson because he had committed the offences even though he was undergoing supervision after his recent release from the Reformative Training Centre (RTC) in 2012 in relation to his previous offences involving rioting, unlawful possession of a weapon and causing hurt.
